Barcode scanners
Barcode scanners
A barcode scanner reads the label on a product, parcel or part and sends the code within a fraction of a second to the till, ERP or WMS. This guide explains the types of barcode scanners, how they differ and how to choose the right one for a shop, warehouse, factory or transport business in Moldova.
What is a barcode scanner
A scanner has two parts: an optical engine that reads the code and a decoder that turns the image or signal into text. The result reaches your software as if it had been typed, only faster and without mistakes. A scanner has no screen and runs no applications: if you need a display and an app, you need a mobile computer, see terminale-mobile.md. For everything else a scanner is the simpler and cheaper answer.
1D and 2D scanners
1D codes are the linear, striped ones found on most retail products. 2D codes (Data Matrix, QR, PDF417) hold more information in a small area and survive scratches better. A 2D scanner, also called an imager, reads both types, so today it is the default choice for almost any new project. A detailed comparison: 1D or 2D scanner, what to choose in 2026.
Laser or imager
A laser scanner reads the code with a moving beam. An imager takes a picture of the code and decodes it, with no moving parts. The imager reads 2D codes, codes on a screen, and dirty or damaged labels, does not depend on the scanning angle and copes better with knocks. This is why most new models from Zebra, Honeywell and Datalogic are imagers.
Reading distance: SR, HD, ER, XR
Manufacturers classify scan engines by working distance:
- SR (standard range): standard range, for codes within the operator's reach, at the checkout or workbench.
- HD (high density): for very small, dense codes read up close, for example in electronics or pharmacies.
- ER (extended range): extended range, for high shelves and pallets further away.
- XR: very long range, for high-bay warehouses where the operator cannot get closer.
Exact distances depend on the specific model and code size, so check the manufacturer's data sheet when choosing. Extended range costs more and does not help up close.
DPM codes
DPM (Direct Part Marking) means a code engraved, stamped or laser-marked straight onto a metal or plastic part, with no label. Contrast is poor, the surface reflects light, and the code may be covered with paint or worn. These need industrial 2D scanners with special illumination and algorithms for difficult codes. More in the article DPM marking and reading in production.
Wired or wireless scanner
Wired. Connected through USB, RS-232 or the keyboard interface (keyboard wedge). USB is the usual option for computers and modern tills. RS-232 stays on older or industrial equipment. The keyboard interface needs no extra software. A wired scanner has no battery and works without interruption, so it suits a checkout.
Wireless. A Bluetooth scanner fits when the operator moves around: stocktaking, goods receipt, work on the shop floor. It ships with a base (cradle) that charges the battery and links the scanner to the computer. Indoor Bluetooth range depends on the building, and battery life on the model and scan volume; see wireless Bluetooth scanners: range and battery. As a rule: if the scanner stays in one place, take a wired one; if it moves, take a wireless one.
Presentation and bioptic scanners for the checkout
A presentation (hands-free) scanner stands on the counter and reads items passed in front of it. It is useful at self-checkouts and low-volume tills. A bioptic scanner is built into the checkout counter and reads the item from one or more directions, often with a scale; it is the choice for hypermarkets and supermarkets, where every second at the till counts. Among the lines we offer: Zebra DS9300 and MP7000, Honeywell Genesis 7580g, Stratos and Orbit, Datalogic Magellan. Details in how to choose a checkout scanner.
Industrial scanners
An industrial (ultra-rugged) scanner is built for warehouses, production and logistics: sealed housing, IP65 or IP67 protection, resistance to drops onto concrete (the exact value is the one the manufacturer declares for the specific model), operation in cold and dust. Example lines: Zebra DS3600 and DS3678, Honeywell Granit, Datalogic PowerScan. Also look at a replaceable cable.
Wearable ring scanners
A ring scanner is worn on the finger and leaves both hands free. It is used for sorting, picking and parcel loading, where the operator handles and scans hundreds of items an hour. It connects over Bluetooth to a mobile computer or a smartphone. Lines: Zebra RS5100 and RS6100, Honeywell Ring series. Check the weight and comfort over a full shift.
HC versions for healthcare
HC (healthcare) versions have a plastic housing that withstands disinfectants, with no crevices where dirt collects, and can be cleaned often. They are used in hospitals, pharmacies and laboratories to identify patients, samples and medicines. They are available from Zebra and Datalogic (Gryphon HC).
How to choose by task
| Task | Scanner type | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Shop, checkout: Retail | Wired 2D or bioptic | Speed, on-screen codes (mobile coupons), built-in scale |
| Warehouse, receiving and stocktaking: Depozit | Wireless 2D, sometimes ER | Battery life, charging base, Bluetooth range |
| Production, marking on parts: Producție | Industrial or DPM | IP rating, DPM codes, shock resistance |
| Logistics and sorting: Logistică | Ring or rugged scanner | Weight, speed, link to a mobile computer |
| Healthcare, pharmacy | HC version | Permitted disinfectants, sealing |
| Coupons and tickets on a phone | 2D imager | Reading from a screen |
For codes shown on a phone screen see scanning from a phone screen. If your warehouse process needs real-time stock and movement records, a WMS helps: wms.md.
Brands
We offer scanners from three manufacturers. Zebra has the widest range, from DS2200 to DS3600 and DS9300. Honeywell is known for Voyager, Xenon and Granit; the Productivity Solutions division is now part of Brady Corporation. Datalogic has Gryphon, QuickScan, PowerScan and Magellan. The real differences are ergonomics, accessories and service. Models can be compared in the catalogue.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a 1D and a 2D scanner?
A 1D scanner reads only linear codes. A 2D scanner also reads Data Matrix, QR and PDF417, plus codes on a screen. For a new project we recommend 2D.
Can a scanner read a code from a phone screen?
Yes, with a 2D imager. Laser scanners usually struggle with screens, so for mobile coupons and tickets choose an imager.
Which wireless scanner should I choose for a warehouse?
One with Bluetooth, a charging base, a battery that lasts a full shift and an industrial housing. For high shelves choose the ER version.
What is a DPM scanner?
It is a 2D scanner that reads codes marked directly on a part: engraved, stamped or laser-marked. It has special illumination and algorithms for poor contrast.
What IP rating is enough?
For a shop IP54 is often enough. For warehouses and production, IP65 or IP67. Check the drop rating on concrete in the model data sheet.
Will a scanner work with my business software?
Usually yes: the scanner behaves like a keyboard (USB or keyboard interface) or sends data over RS-232. For 1C, ERP or WMS no special driver is normally needed, and settings are made with configuration barcodes.
How do I find out which model suits me and what it costs?
Prices are given on request. Describe the task, volume and working conditions, and we will propose suitable models. Write to us on the Contacts page.
Need help choosing?
Tell us where the scanner will work and which codes it reads, and we will prepare a proposal for Moldova. Write to us via Contacts for a consultation.
